Stand up comedy was introduced to China quite recently. Unfortunately it cannot survive in an authoritarian society. Its humors and satires can only be enjoyed in a tolerant free world. As China is becoming increasingly oppressive, stand up comedy will soon become a thing of the past.
"ZhouLiWang (Zhou Dynasty King Li)", 3000 years ago, "blocked people's mouth like blocking the river" ("FangMinZhiKou ShenYuFangChuan") and then people in the city ("GuoRen") rose-up to fight against him and he had to run away. This is a true story in Chinese history about 3000 years ago.
Stand-up comedy is my favorite. It’s a testament to the personal freedom and liberty that Americans enjoy and take for granted. I have watched a few comic shows by this Chinese troupe on the internet. Although still rusty, their performances were enjoyable. Chinese in general do not have good sense of humor. Now with Xi Jinping’s tight controls, dark days are ahead for China, and for comedians in particular. They will need to walk a tightrope, if they can survive this crackdown.
